Hajdúszoboszló, famous for its thermal baths, has joined the Green Bus Programme: a fully low‑floor Ikarus 120e electric bus has entered service in the town, offering seating for 30 passengers and space for 55 standing. The vehicle is part of Volánbusz’s order for 20 Ikarus 120e buses that will operate in six Hungarian cities. With a length of 12.9 metres, energy‑efficient drivetrain and a range of up to 580 kilometres, the Ikarus 120e is an ideal choice for greening regional transport. Deploying the bus in Hajdúszoboszló further strengthens the presence of the Hungarian electric‑bus manufacturer in the country’s public transport system.

Between December 2024 and May 2025 the Ikarus 80e V3 electric midibus operated in six Slovenian cities—Ljubljana, Kranj, Nova Gorica, Koper, Maribor and Ptuj—under the management of local public transport operators. The nearly half‑year‑long roadshow aimed to assess the vehicle’s performance and reliability in real operating conditions and to gather operator feedback for fine‑tuning the product. Over the course of the trial the midibus covered 4 653 kilometres, achieved an average energy consumption of 0.0028 SoC per kilometre and proved that a 350‑kilometre range on a single charge is attainable. The closing ceremony in Ptuj brought together Ikarus representatives and Slovenian partners to celebrate the successful test. Powered by a 200 kW motor and a 282 kWh battery, the fully low‑floor 80e V3 midibus demonstrated outstanding energy efficiency and suitability for urban and regional transport.

On May 22, 2025, Ikarus officially concluded its nearly half-year-long Slovenian test roadshow, during which the Ikarus 80e V3 electric midibus proved its reliability and efficiency in public transport operations across six different Slovenian cities. The closing event took place in Slovenia’s oldest town, Ptuj, where, in addition to transport industry representatives, diplomatic delegations from both Hungary and Slovenia were also present. The aim of the event was to further deepen Ikarus' cooperation with key players in the Slovenian transport sector and to present the company’s long-term strategic goals in the region. Speakers at the event included Nuška Gajšek, Mayor of Ptuj, Andor Ferenc Dávid, Ambassador of Hungary to Slovenia, János Hunor Kelemen, Sales Director of the Ikarus Group, and Aleš Šifrer, Managing Director of Arriva Slovenia. Throughout the winter-spring testing period, the Ikarus 80e V3 covered a total of 4,653 kilometers and achieved an impressive average energy consumption of 0.0028 SoC/km. Real-world tests confirmed that the vehicle comfortably reaches a 350-kilometer range on a single charge under typical urban driving conditions – an outstanding result in its category. Following the conclusion of the test, the Ikarus 80e V3 completed the nearly 345-kilometer journey from Ptuj to Székesfehérvár without any intermediate charging, arriving at the Ikarus headquarters with 40% battery capacity remaining. This further highlights the vehicle’s exceptional energy efficiency and long range, making it ideal for both urban and regional transport applications. János Hunor Kelemen, Sales Director of Ikarus, commented on the results of the testing period: “The Ikarus 80e proved its capabilities in real traffic conditions – both its range and energy efficiency stand out even at the international level. This confirms that we are on the right track in developing sustainable urban mobility solutions.” Ikarus 80e V3 The Ikarus 80e V3 electric midibus features 100% electric drive, a fully low-floor passenger area, and advanced technological solutions designed to meet the needs of both operators and passengers. The vehicle is powered by a 200 kW electric motor, supported by a 282 kWh LFP battery pack manufactured by CATL. The tested version operated with zero emissions even without diesel-powered auxiliary heating, meeting today’s environmental expectations.

During the GreenTech 2021 sustainability exhibition in Zalaegerszeg, the Ikarus 120e—the first fully electric bus designed and manufactured in Hungary with European type approval—was tested again on the Zalazone automotive proving ground. The low‑floor 12.9‑metre bus carries 111 passengers and can travel up to 580 kilometres on a single charge. At the exhibition Ikarus specialists highlighted the scalability of the battery capacity and the energy‑efficient drivetrain. The company’s presence at GreenTech demonstrates its active contribution to developing sustainable mobility solutions.

As part of Hungary’s Green Bus Program, 20 environmentally friendly, fully electric Ikarus 120e buses will join the MÁV Group’s fleet in 2025, supported by the Ministry of Energy and HUMDA Hungarian Mobility Development Agency. The first of these new electric buses is set to enter service in Keszthely on March 21, 2025. By the end of September, further Ikarus 120e buses will be operating in Komárom, Tata, Komló, Hajdúszoboszló and Balatonfüred, contributing to cleaner, greener local transport in these cities. The first Ikarus 120e was presented on March 20 in Keszthely. It is expected to cover over 38,000 kilometers annually, serving passengers on local routes 2, 3, 5, and C5. To maximize utilization, the bus will also handle regional trips during off-peak times, serving lines such as Hévíz–Keszthely–Várvölgy–Tapolca and Keszthely–Rezi, among others. By replacing an older, nearly 24-year-old diesel vehicle, this single electric bus can reduce local CO₂ emissions by approximately 15 tons annually. The low-floor Ikarus 120e offers space for 30 seated and 55 standing passengers and can travel up to 350 kilometers on a single charge. It is equipped with a dedicated space for wheelchairs or strollers, an accessibility ramp, electronic passenger information systems, onboard cameras, air conditioning, and USB charging ports for passenger comfort and safety. The bus will be charged using a high-power charging station installed by Mobiliti VOLÁNBUSZ Kft. at the MÁV Group’s Keszthely depot.

Ikarus places great emphasis on building regional partnerships. In 2025 the company teamed up with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje to organise a professional forum. Industry experts, engineers and decision‑makers were invited to share their experiences and ideas for developing sustainable transport. The aim was to deepen cooperation and present Ikarus’s long‑term strategic goals in the region—echoing the closing event of the Slovenian test roadshow, where the company highlighted the importance of working with regional partners. Participants discussed operational experience with Ikarus electric buses and worked together to find solutions to the challenges of sustainable mobility in the Balkans.

On 19 November 2024 the University of Novi Sad hosted the “eMobility 4 Sustainability” forum, with Ikarus representatives among the participants.  The event aimed to showcase the latest developments in electric mobility and to foster cooperation between academia and industry. Ikarus shared its experience with the zero‑emission 120e and 80e bus models—the former carrying 111 passengers with a range of up to 580 kilometres, the latter accommodating 60 passengers and offering a 410‑kilometre range. The forum highlighted how Hungarian‑developed electric buses contribute to the future of sustainable transport.

Budapest, 29.10.2024. Volánbusz is set to expand its fleet with 20 new environmentally friendly, fully electric Ikarus 120e buses. Supported by the Ministry of Energy and the HUMDA Hungarian Mobility Development Agency, part of the Széchenyi University Group, the bus fleets in Balatonfüred, Hajdúszoboszló, Keszthely, Komárom, Komló, and Tata will soon feature green, eco-friendly public transportation options. The agreement for the delivery of the buses by the Ikarus Group was signed on October 29, 2024. The successful Green Bus Program continues: following upgrades in the Budapest metropolitan area and six county capitals, six smaller cities will now modernize their public transportation systems with alternative, eco-friendly vehicles. The consortium of Volánbusz and Mobiliti Volánbusz Kft. has secured more than HUF 4.4 billion in funding through HUMDA’s tender. As a result, with 100% support from the Ministry of Energy and HUMDA, Balatonfüred will receive 3 buses, Hajdúszoboszló 1, Keszthely 1, Komárom 2, Komló 7, and Tata 6 new fully electric buses by early next year. The buses are scheduled for delivery within 12 months from the signing of the contract, with the possibility of early fulfillment. Mobiliti Volánbusz Kft., a joint venture of MVM Mobiliti Kft. and Volánbusz, will also build the necessary charging infrastructure, with 80% of the costs covered by the project. The low-floor Ikarus 120e electric buses can accommodate 30 seated and 55 standing passengers and can travel up to 300 kilometers on a single charge. These air-conditioned buses, which also feature auxiliary diesel heating, provide ample space for wheelchairs and strollers, along with boarding ramps, electronic passenger information systems, onboard cameras, and USB charging points, ensuring a comfortable and safe journey. The buses’ charging needs will be met by high-performance charging stations installed at the Volánbusz depots or bus terminals in the respective cities. By replacing diesel buses with these new electric models, the affected towns can collectively reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 850 tons per year.

Ikarus made its debut at the Electrobus stand as an independent exhibitor at the Busworld exhibition. A new chapter unfolds for Ikarus as the company introduces a revamped brand design, new leadership, expanded product portfolio, and cutting-edge developments at Busworld, Europe's largest industry expo. In a historic move, Ikarus makes its debut as an independent exhibitor. Ikarus has long been a committed partner in urban transport development, aiming to meet the ever-changing market demands. In preparation for 2024, the company responds with new plans and developments, expanding its product and service portfolio to align with evolving expectations. At the heart of this renewal is the unveiling of the latest electric bus development, the Ikarus 80e midibus, at the exhibition. This compact bus, with a length of 8.5 meters and two doors, boasts independent wheel suspension, accommodating 55 passengers or 18 seated. It features a motor power of 100kW/170kW, 2000Nm torque, and a 281.9 kWh battery. The electric midibus is just one element of Ikarus's 2024 plans. Also showcased at the exhibition are the project plans for the Ikarus 120e v4 and the Ikarus electric articulated bus, the 180e. Thanks to the latest innovations, these vehicles also feature independent wheel suspension. To support engineers and partners, the company has introduced software solutions facilitating the design of new structural solutions. Consistency is maintained across all Ikarus electric buses, using only the highest quality products from suppliers such as KNORR, ZF (BOSCH), CATL, and ACTIA. On September 3rd, Ikarus had the privilege of participating in the Elektrobus Forum Belgrad, a professional panel discussion held at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade.  The event, focused on the greening of urban transportation, was attended by notable figures including József Magyar Hungary's Ambassador to Belgrade, who emphasized that the development of green transportation is key to the region's shared future.  Dejan Popović, President of the Energy Council of the Republic of Serbia, highlighted that the only effective counter to the growing car traffic in Belgrade is the development and electrification of public transportation. Roland Feher , CEO of Ikarus, shared that the Ikarus 80e model has been well-received internationally due to its size and range, and he is hopeful that the Belgrade trials will be equally successful. "We can present a quality product that Hungary can be proud of. Ikarus electric buses can play a key role in shaping sustainable transportation in the region" he emphasized.  The event also saw participation from Dr. Aleksandar Simonović, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Belgrade, who underscored the university's commitment to researching and developing sustainable technologies, and their pride in contributing to the advancement of green transportation.
